Priest Under Investigation For Punching Best Man At Wedding Ceremony.

Call it a Holy punch! A priest of an Orthodox Christian Church in Nicosia, Cyprus is under Investigation by Cypriot police for punching a best man while officiating a wedding ceremony.

The victim incurred the wrath of the priest when he continually slapped the back of the groom in accordance to an old Ottoman tradition.

The police confirmed the incident and added that the best man, who happens to be the 22 - year old brother of the groom was uninjured but the family filed a complaint nonetheless.


A family member who's identity cannot be revealed due to the fact that investigations are still ongoing said the priest had gestured for the slapping to cease and when his warning was ignored, punched the best man in the chest and face.

Speaking to the Cyprus News Agency, Bishop of Paphos Georgios threw his weight behind the priest, stating emphatically that the backslapping custom was archaic and does not befit Cyprus' Orthodox Christian traditions.

Cyprus is an European island with an estimated population of 1.1million as at 2013.  Their official languages are Greek and Turkish.
